We’ll miss you, Brutus.

Brutus, the friendliest ferret ever
Passed away 6th June 2008.

Brutus joined the family a few years back as a middle-aged ferret. He promptly took charge of the household and sorted out the uppity cats, who (until that point) thought it was fun to bully ferrets. They soon learned. In fact I still remember giggling at the four cats lined up on the back of the couch with HUGE eyes, wondering what on Earth had just happened.

Brutus was a very gentle ferret. The gentlest I’ve known. He once or twice nipped me on the toes while running past in the middle of a game, but other than that I think he’s the only ferret I’ve come across who hasn’t actually bitten me. In fact, he never bit anybody. Ever.

He was never sure we were going to feed him again, and always stashed some food away. The cats’ food was favourite, of course. Whenever he came into the house, he’d first stuff himself, then hide little piles of it all over the place.

I think my favourite memory of Brutus is how keen he was to be in the house with us, and how clever he was to very quickly learn (after been shown only a couple of times) how to use the cat-flap. Visitors were always surprised when we announced we were “bringing Brutie in to play”, and just opened his cage. Out he came, onto the grass, bounced across the lawn with that special bounce only happy ferrets have, up the back step and through the flap.

You brought us many smiles and giggles and always warmed our hearts. We’ll miss you, Brutie. Rest in peace, pal.
