Wanted: Quick-to-Deploy VPN
I’ve been using Hamachi for some time now, and love almost all aspects of it. The only bits I’m not fond of are the occasional instabilities, and the reliance on LogMeIn’s mediation server. A Hamachi server appliance was part of the original developer’s roadmap, but it looks like LMI aren’t going to follow that route.
Having scoured the web, I’ve reached the conclusion that there’s just nothing else out there. Steve Gibson’s CryptoLink would probably do the job eventually, but it’s years away at the moment. Have I missed anything? Can anyone point me in the right direction? I need something:
- so easy to deploy you can talk a computer novice through the process, download-to-secure, in a matter of minutes
- that gives me Hamachi-like connectivity, effectively joining PCs all over the place into one LAN
- not reliant on third-party servers or services
- if it supports authentication via OpenVPN that would be a bonus
- open-source would be perfect, but I’ll pay if I have to.
