Bad Phorm!

Phorm is a terrifying new technology being implemented by UK ISPs (and probably right around the world, but I’ll focus on my little corner of it if that’s OK with you), which tracks and analyses your web traffic for the purpose of “targeted advertising”. Read all about it at BadPhorm – When good ISPs go bad!

This is a serious threat to your privacy, and may very well be a violation of your rights, not to mention possibly breaking a few laws. At some level, I take my hat off to these guys, as what they have done was extremely difficult and they’ve shown lots of cleverness and innovation. However, I’d be a lot happier if they hadn’t gone to the Dark Side. Powers like that should only be used for Good.

Intercepting *MY* web traffic, on-the-fly modifying *MY* content, injecting (very cleverly) spoofed first-party cookies onto *MY* computer, tracking *MY* activity, all so that they can sell *MY* profile to advertisers! And all done without my KNOWLEDGE (well not any more, obviously), let alone consent. Not acceptable!

Please visit the BadPhorm site. Poke around, read the articles. Add your voice to the protests.

More to follow once I’ve found

  1. A reliable method of detecting whether or not you’ve “been phormed”
  2. A way of avoiding being tracked at all
